Island Getaway

Our clients on this project are passionate entrepreneurs who use this summer home as a haven away from the hectic pace of city life but also as an entertainment hub for family and friends to gather.

Perched atop a secluded island in the Ivy Lea region of the Thousand Islands, the cottage was still showing signs of its previous owners who were hunting and fishing enthusiasts. Wall to wall (and ceiling) pine shiplap and utilitarian interiors kept the home feeling dark and cramped. Our clients were looking for an update that would echo their effervescent love of the outdoors but in a more modern context. We set out to brighten and open up the space while adding bits of personality and indulgence throughout the home.

By removing a wall separating the kitchen from the dining room, we created an open concept space with expansive views along the main living areas. With a bit of a nudge, our clients trusted us to paint the walls a warm white, visually doubling the living space but also allowing the exterior landscape to really shine through. The ceiling was left bare and new engineered wide plank flooring in a coordinating wood tone was installed to keep the cottage feel.

All three bathrooms and the powder room were redesigned using finishes reminiscent of the water, rocks and trees that surround the property. A steam shower, heated floors and towel warmers were added for that extra touch of pampering after a dip in the cool waters of the St-Lawrence River.

In the primary bedroom, a custom coffee station with integrated mini-fridge lets the owners start the day at their own pace while the house is full of guests. In the other bedrooms, the walls were dressed in billowy lime wash and rugged grasscloth to add hints of whimsy and reflect the personalities of the owners’ grown children.

Whether its just the two of them or a crowd of twelve (plus 6 dogs!), the cottage now offers its owners a place to make lasting memories in the lap of luxurious comfort!
